Who said “No New Taxes?” President Bush or Obama?
The answer is both – the first President Bush and Obama. The 41st President, George H.W. Bush campaigned on the platform of no new taxes. And when he found out the country couldn’t survive he raised taxes. President Obama also campaigned on No New Taxes if you make less than $250,000 per year. And within his first 100 days in office, he has raised taxes.
“I can make a firm pledge,” President Obama said on the campaign trail in Dover, N.H. on September 12th, 2008. “Under my plan no family making less than $250,000 per year will see any form of tax increase”. Just like President Bush, he quickly found out running a campaign is not the same as running a Country.
April 1st, 2009, President Obama No New Tax pledge was broken by the highest tax increase in the history of America. The tax on cigarettes was increased 159%! Since the poor are known to smoke more than the rich, this is in direct conflict with his campaign promises.
Where is the accountability? Why are the American people – those that smoke and those that don’t – not complaining? Why is this only a short story in the media?
This is not about cigarette taxes, it is about breaking promises. Are American’s just used to this type of behavior? If We the People continue to accept these small tax increases we will continue to be slaves to our government. As the stories below represent, a bunch of small taxes equals a large share of your income:
